Children & Young People's Rights
CCYP (Scotland) Act 2003
The Commissioner for Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2003 establishes the post of Commissioner, how they will be appointed and how they can help.
The Act also states the Commissioner must:
- Promote and safeguard the rights of children and young people.
- Promote awareness and understanding of the rights of children and young people.
- Keep under review the law, policy and practice relating to the rights of children and young people with a view to assessing the adequacy and effectiveness of such law, policy and practice.
- Promote best practice by service providers.
- Promote, commission, undertake and publish research on matters relating to the rights of children and young people.
- Encourage the involvement of children and young people in the work of the Commissioner.
- Ensure that children and young people are aware of the functions of the Commissioner and communication mechanisms.
- Consult children and young people on work to be undertaken.
- Consult organisations working with and for children and young people on the work to be undertaken.
- Pay particular attention to children and young people who do not have other adequate means to make their views known.
- Prepare and keep under review a strategy for involving children and young people.
- Carry out investigations on the extent to which service providers have regard to the rights, interests and views of children and young people, on relevant matters of 'particular significance' to groups.
- Lay an annual report before the Scottish Parliament
