Citizenship Foundation’s ‘Paying For It’ launches an online tool which will enable 14-18 year olds to create and defend their own budget for the nation. Students from across the UK will be able to take up the challenge via the Chance to be Chancellor website for the next two months.
Chance to be Chancellor gives the voters of the future a platform to voice their views on important economic decisions. A Youth Budget for the financial year will be produced from the entries to represent the voice of young people in anticipation of the official budget on 21st March.
Young people can take the challenge of stepping into the shoes of the Chancellor by making decisions on spending and taxation with our online tool. Their decisions will form the Youth Budget 2012. For a chance to win the national competition entrants must make a case for their decisions. They could win an iPad, visit the Treasury and make the news!
Chance to be Chancellor is an opportunity for young people to give their informed opinion on the UK’s economy – and win the Chance to be Youth Chancellor. Last year around 3000 young people contributed to the first ever Youth Budget.
The Youth Budget gives the voters of the future – a platform to voice their views on important economic decisions. Young people have a valuable contribution to make to public debate and we believe that they have the right to have their voices heard. Whilst young people cannot vote, they are the next generation of voters, and will ultimately ‘pay’ for decisions made today.

Teachers are able to download ‘Paying For It’s free Citizenship and PSHE lesson plans for Key Stage 3 and 4 which cover topics that link to the challenge.
