Our colleague Sarah-Lou will be putting a brave face on next Tuesday, as she prepares to scale three of the UK’s tallest mountains within 24 hours.
She will do so as one of Jessica’s Divas, a group of eight women raising money for charity. Within the space of a day, the Divas will climb:
-
Ben Nevis the UK’s highest mountain
-
Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England
-
Mount Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales.
Four drivers will accompany the eight climbers on their journey, to make sure they reach each mountain safely and within schedule.
Climbing for a cause
The Divas will raise money for:
-
Target Ovarian Cancer, the ovarian cancer charity working to save lives and help women diagnosed live their lives to the full— wherever they are in the UK
-
CHAS, a charity providing the only hospice services in Scotland for children and young people who have life-shortening conditions for which there is no known cure.
These charities have been chosen for very personal reasons.
The Divas were inspired to form after Head Diva Sarah Pierce experienced two family tragedies.
She lost her mother – who had never smoked nor drank to excess – to ovarian cancer.
She lost her 10-month niece Jessica – who gave the Divas their name – to epilepsy.
In both cases, Sarah was moved by the level of care and support charities like these gave to her loved ones.
he said of her three peaks challenge:
“Why are we doing this?
“If my mum, and other women like her, could find the strength to face whatever treatment may be next on the consultants list, and my dad was always brave enough to hold her hand.
“If my brother and sister-in-law – and other families – can find the courage get through each day despite their hearts being in shreds.
“If Jessica could manage to fight so hard for 10 whole months.
“Then why can’t I find just a tiny bit of that to get to the top of a few mountains?”
