Healthy school meal scheme fails as pupils turn to fast food

Ambitious plans to make Scotland’s school dinners healthy have backfired after tens of thousands of children rejected canteen meals in favour of fast-food in the four years since the Scottish Government imposed tough rules.

Figures obtained by The Herald to be released later today will show uptake of school meals in Glasgow alone has plunged from 61% in 2006, when the new regime was introduced, which dictates how much salt, fat and sugar they can contain, to 38%.

They will reveal that across Scotland, the total number of dinners served up has fallen by 5.7 million a year since 2002.
